What are prepositions?

Prepositions show relationships between words. They indicate time, place, direction, and connection. Mastering them makes your English sound natural and accurate.

“I live in Delhi. I wake up at 7 AM.”

Why they matter

Using wrong prepositions is one of the most common mistakes for learners. Correct preposition use improves clarity and makes you sound more fluent.

IN, ON, AT – For Time

IN

Longer periods: months, years, centuries, seasons, parts of day

in July / in 2024 / in summer / in the morning

Examples: “I was born in 1995.” “She works in the evening.”

ON

Specific days and dates: days of week, specific dates, special days

on Monday / on July 15th / on my birthday

Examples: “Let's meet on Friday.” “I have a meeting on the 20th.”

AT

Specific times: clock times, holidays without "day", specific moments

at 5 PM / at night / at midnight / at lunchtime

Examples: “The class starts at 9 AM.” “I sleep at night.”

IN, ON, AT – For Place

IN

Inside a space: countries, cities, rooms, enclosed spaces

in India / in the room / in the car

Examples: “She lives in Mumbai.” “The keys are in my bag.”

ON

On a surface: streets, floors, surfaces, devices

on the table / on the wall / on the phone

Examples: “The book is on the desk.” “I saw it on TV.”

AT

Specific points: addresses, specific locations, events

at the bus stop / at home / at the cinema

Examples: “Meet me at the station.” “She is at work.”

FOR and WITH – Purpose & Accompaniment

FOR

Purpose, duration, benefit, exchange

“This gift is for you.” (purpose)

“I waited for 20 minutes.” (duration)

“She works for a tech company.” (employment)

“I paid ₹500 for this shirt.” (exchange)

WITH

Accompaniment, tool/instrument, having/containing

“I went with my friend.” (accompaniment)

“I cut the bread with a knife.” (tool)

“She is a woman with great ideas.” (having)

“I agree with you.” (agreement)

10 Common Preposition Mistakes

❌ I will call you in Monday. → ✅ I will call you on Monday.

❌ She is good in English. → ✅ She is good at English.

❌ I am waiting since 2 hours. → ✅ I have been waiting for 2 hours.

❌ He lives in the 3rd floor. → ✅ He lives on the 3rd floor.

❌ We reached at home at 8 PM. → ✅ We reached home at 8 PM. (no preposition before home)

❌ Please listen me. → ✅ Please listen to me.

❌ I am married with her. → ✅ I am married to her.

❌ She depends of her parents. → ✅ She depends on her parents.

Preposition FAQs

When do we use "in" vs "at" for places? Use "in" for larger areas (cities, countries). Use "at" for specific points (at the door, at the bus stop).

Is it "in the morning" or "at morning"? Always "in the morning/afternoon/evening". "At night" is the exception.

Do we say "on the weekend" or "at the weekend"? Both are correct. American English: "on the weekend". British English: "at the weekend".

What about "interested in" vs "interested on"? It's always "interested in" something/someone.
