The Problem with Past Tense

Many Hindi speakers struggle with past tense because English has two different ways to talk about the past: Simple Past and Present Perfect. In Hindi, both often translate the same way. But in English, they have different meanings. Using the wrong one can confuse the listener. This lesson will clear all confusion. You will learn exactly when to use Simple Past, when to use Present Perfect, and how to form both correctly. You will also learn the 50 most common irregular verbs, because they are the key to speaking past tense naturally. By the end of this lesson, you will never confuse these tenses again.

Remember: Simple Past = finished time + finished action. Present Perfect = connection to now.
Simple Past (सामान्य भूतकाल) – Completed actions at a specific time in the past

When to use Simple Past: Use Simple Past when the action started AND finished at a specific time in the past. The time is usually mentioned or understood. The action has no connection to the present. Think of it as a closed chapter.

Specific past time words
yesterday, last week, last month, last year, in 2020, two days ago, when I was a child
Regular verbs
Add -ed: work→worked, play→played, watch→watched
Irregular verbs
Change form: go→went, eat→ate, see→saw, buy→bought
Formula: Positive: Subject + past form of verb | Negative: Subject + did not + base verb | Question: Did + subject + base verb?
Positive Examples:
I watched a movie last night.
She went to Delhi yesterday.
We ate at a new restaurant on Sunday.
He bought a car in 2022.
They arrived at 8 PM.
Negative Examples:
I didn't like the movie.
She didn't come to the party.
We didn't have time.
Question Examples:
Did you finish your homework?
Where did she go?
What time did they arrive?
Present Perfect (पूर्ण वर्तमान काल) – Past actions connected to the present

When to use Present Perfect: Use Present Perfect when the past action has a connection to the present moment. This happens in three situations: (1) life experiences (no specific time), (2) recent events with results now, (3) actions that started in past and continue to now.

Life experiences (no specific time)
I have been to Japan. Have you ever eaten sushi?
Recent events (with just, already, yet)
She has just finished her work. I have already eaten.
Actions continuing from past to now (with for/since)
I have lived here for 5 years. She has worked here since 2020.
Formula: Subject + have/has + past participle (3rd form)
Positive Examples:
I have visited Mumbai many times.
She has finished her report.
We have known each other for 10 years.
He has already eaten lunch.
Negative Examples:
I have never been to America.
She hasn't finished yet.
We haven't decided.
Question Examples:
Have you ever seen a tiger?
Has she called you?
How long have you lived here?
Important Rule: Do NOT use specific past time words (yesterday, last week, in 2020) with Present Perfect. Use Simple Past instead.
❌ "I have seen him yesterday" → ✅ "I saw him yesterday"
✅ "I have seen him" (no time) or "I saw him yesterday" (specific time)

Simple Past vs Present Perfect - The Clear Difference

Simple Past
Specific time in past (finished)
"I saw him yesterday."

No connection to present
Present Perfect

"She has lived in Delhi for 2 years." (still lives there)

Simple Past का उपयोग कब करें: जब कार्य भूतकाल में किसी निश्चित समय पर शुरू हुआ और समाप्त हुआ। समय आमतौर पर बताया जाता है। कार्य का वर्तमान से कोई संबंध नहीं है।

सूत्र: Positive: Subject + क्रिया का भूतकाल रूप | Negative: Subject + did not + मूल क्रिया | Question: Did + subject + मूल क्रिया?
I watched a movie last night.
मैंने कल रात एक फिल्म देखी।
She went to Delhi yesterday.
वह कल दिल्ली गई।
I didn't like the movie.
मुझे फिल्म पसंद नहीं आई।
Present Perfect (पूर्ण वर्तमान काल) – वर्तमान से जुड़े भूतकालिक कार्य

Present Perfect का उपयोग कब करें: जब भूतकालिक कार्य का वर्तमान से संबंध हो। तीन स्थितियाँ: (1) जीवन के अनुभव (बिना समय के), (2) हाल की घटनाएँ, (3) कार्य जो भूतकाल में शुरू हुए और अभी भी जारी हैं।

सूत्र: Subject + have/has + क्रिया का तीसरा रूप (past participle)
I have visited Mumbai many times.
मैं कई बार मुंबई जा चुका हूँ।
She has finished her report.
उसने अपनी रिपोर्ट खत्म कर ली है।
I have never been to America.
मैं कभी अमेरिका नहीं गया।

Simple Past vs Present Perfect - स्पष्ट अंतर

Simple Past

"I saw him yesterday."
"She lived in Delhi for 2 years." (फिर चली गई)
Present Perfect
बिना निश्चित समय
"I have seen him."
"She has lived in Delhi for 2 years." (अभी भी रहती है)
