Why Present Tense is Most Important

In daily English conversation, about 70% of sentences are in present tense. When you talk about your daily routine, your job, your likes and dislikes, what is happening right now, or your future plans - you use present tense. Mastering present tense will immediately improve your speaking fluency more than any other grammar topic. This lesson focuses on two present tenses: Present Simple (for habits, routines, and facts) and Present Continuous (for actions happening now and temporary situations). You will learn when to use each, how to form them correctly, common mistakes to avoid, and get plenty of practice examples. By the end of this lesson, you will be able to speak about your daily life confidently in English.

Remember: Present tense is your best friend in daily conversation. Master it first.
Present Simple (सामान्य वर्तमान) – Habits, routines, facts, general truths

When to use Present Simple: This is the most frequently used tense in daily conversation. Use it to talk about things that happen regularly, things that are always true, and your permanent situations.

Habits & Routines
I drink coffee every morning.
Facts & General Truths
The sun rises in the east.
Likes & Dislikes
She loves watching movies.
Permanent Situations
I work at a software company.
Scheduled Events
The train leaves at 6 PM.
Formula: Positive: Subject + base verb (+ s/es for he/she/it) | Negative: Subject + do/does + not + base verb | Question: Do/Does + subject + base verb?
IMPORTANT: Adding 's' or 'es' for he/she/it
Most verbs: add 's' → work→works, eat→eats, speak→speaks
Verbs ending in ch, sh, ss, x, o: add 'es' → watch→watches, go→goes, fix→fixes
Verbs ending in consonant + y: change y to ies → study→studies, fly→flies
Exception: have→has, do→does, be→is
Positive Examples:
I wake up at 6 AM every day.
She works in a hospital.
He plays cricket on weekends.
We live in Delhi.
Negative Examples:
I don't like spicy food.
She doesn't smoke.
He doesn't speak French.
Question Examples:
Do you speak English?

Time words used with Present Simple: always, usually, often, sometimes, rarely, never, every day, every week, on Mondays, in the morning, at night
Present Continuous (अपूर्ण वर्तमान) – Actions happening now, temporary situations, future plans

When to use Present Continuous: Use this tense for actions that are in progress right now, for temporary situations, and for fixed future plans (especially with time expressions like tomorrow, next week).

Actions happening now
I am reading a book right now.
Temporary situations
I am living with my parents until I find a house.
Future plans (fixed)
I am meeting my friend tomorrow.
Changing situations
The weather is getting colder.
Annoying habits (with 'always')
He is always interrupting me!
Formula: Subject + am/is/are + verb-ing
Spelling rules for -ing form:
Most verbs: add 'ing' → eat→eating, work→working
Verbs ending in 'e': remove 'e' + ing → write→writing, take→taking
One-syllable verbs ending vowel+consonant: double consonant + ing → run→running, sit→sitting
Verbs ending in 'ie': change ie to y + ing → lie→lying, die→dying
Positive Examples:
I am studying English now.
She is cooking dinner.
They are playing football.
He is working from home today.
Negative Examples:
I am not sleeping.
She is not feeling well.
They are not coming to the party.
Question Examples:
What are you doing?
Is she coming with us?
Are they working today?
Time words used with Present Continuous: now, right now, at the moment, today, this week, this month, currently, tomorrow (for future plans), next week (for future plans)

Present Simple vs Present Continuous - The Key Difference

Present Simple
Permanent, regular, habitual
"I work in an office." (my job - permanent)
Present Continuous
Temporary, now, in progress
"I am working from home today." (temporary)
Same verb, different meaning:
I live in Delhi. (permanent home)
I am living in a hotel. (temporary)
She wears glasses. (habit)
She is wearing a red dress. (right now)
Important: Stative Verbs
Some verbs are NOT used in continuous form. These are called stative verbs. They describe states, not actions.
Common stative verbs: know, believe, understand, want, need, like, love, hate, prefer, belong, own, seem, appear, look (seem), smell, taste, feel (opinion)

Common Mistakes Hindi Speakers Make

Wrong: "She go to school every day." → Correct: "She goes to school every day." (Don't forget 's' for he/she/it)
Wrong: "I am knowing him." → Correct: "I know him." (Don't use continuous with stative verbs)
Wrong: "He don't like tea." → Correct: "He doesn't like tea." (Use 'doesn't' for he/she/it)
Wrong: "What you are doing?" → Correct: "What are you doing?" (In questions, auxiliary comes before subject)
Wrong: "I am having a car." → Correct: "I have a car." (Have for possession is stative - no continuous)
